Demetris "Al" Alfred for Board President

In Al's words

Why I'm Running

St. Louis has always been my home. For 33 years, it was also my office.

As a firefighter, you don’t get to pick and choose which calls you answer. You hear the alarm, and you get to work. I answered calls in every neighborhood in this city. I saw neighbors looking out for each other, families building their futures, and people taking pride in their blocks. I also saw how failing city services and years of disinvestment make daily life harder than it should be.

I love St. Louis. I want people to build a life here, raise a family here, and stay here. I’m running for President of the Board of Aldermen because city government has a responsibility to help make that possible.

That starts with getting down to the nitty-gritty of city government.

It means smooth sidewalks where parents can push a stroller, and seniors can walk safely. It means clean, free public parks with good places for children to play, after-school programs that keep kids safe and engaged, and investment in affordable, dependable child care so parents can go to work knowing their children are cared for.

It means partnering with our public schools to invest in strong community schools and supporting economic development that strengthens the neighborhoods and tax base those schools depend on. When the city considers development incentives, the benefits to our children, schools, and existing residents must be part of the decision.

It also means supporting the connections that strengthen neighborhoods, from National Night Out to block meetings and neighborhood events where residents and first responders get to know one another before an emergency happens.

A City Families Can Afford

The cost of housing, groceries, transportation, and child care puts real pressure on family budgets. City government cannot control every price, but we can make decisions that help people afford to live here.

We can support more housing that working families can afford, help residents repair and remain in their homes, and make it easier to turn vacant properties into homes and neighborhood businesses. We can invest in child care and work with our regional transit partners for faster, more reliable bus service that gets people to work, school, and appointments.

Reliable city services matter to affordability, too. A damaged sidewalk, a missed bus, or a street that damages your car can mean another expense or lost time at work. Getting the basics right makes a difference in a family’s budget.

Neighborhoods That Work

Residents deserve trash collection they can count on, functioning streetlights, maintained streets, and a clear response when they report a problem. I want to restore dependable recycling service and make it easier for families to help build a cleaner, greener St. Louis.

People should know who is responsible for fixing a problem and whether progress is being made. As Board President, I will push for clear service standards, public reporting, and accountability for results.

Responsible Stewardship of the Rams Settlement

The Rams settlement money is a responsibility to the people of St. Louis. We need to use it carefully, with transparent decisions, strong oversight, and investments that deliver lasting public benefits.

Residents should be able to see where the money goes, what it is supposed to accomplish, and whether it delivers. We must consider the long-term cost of the projects we fund and make sure these dollars strengthen our city for the next generation.

The Next Chapter of Service

Not every national problem can be solved at City Hall. But we have a duty to serve our people and make their lives better through the decisions we do control.

We can make it easier to get to work, raise children, enjoy a neighborhood park, open a business, and grow older in the place you call home. That work requires listening, cooperation, and a willingness to follow through on the details.

For 33 years, I answered the call to serve St. Louis. I’m ready to bring that same commitment to this next chapter: showing up for every neighborhood and getting to work.
